2019 SEASON PREVIEW: RED DUST HEELERS

Last Year: 10 wins, 8 losses- THIRD PLACE

Roster: Ricky Cox, Brendan Hardman, Angus Johnston, Jake Kavanagh, Matthew Lodewikus, Thomas McHugh, Ryan Morich, Brad Ness, Clare Nott, Kathleen O’Kelly-Kennedy, Robert Pike, Ben Sainsbury, Phill Turner & Cooper Whitestyles.

Fixture: The Heelers start their season by playing both of last year’s grand-finalists in Round One as they travel across the country to Logan for the season’s opening round. The Heelers will then make their home debut in Round Three as they host the West Adelaide Thunder for a three-game series at the Bendat Basketball Centre, setting the tone for their 2019 campaign.

Overview: After finishing fourth in the regular season and then securing third place with a 94-81 victory over the Kilsyth Cobras last year, the Heelers will be looking to go one better and make the NWBL’s final game in 2019. Brad Ness will return once again as player/coach after he averaged 18.2 points and 11.3 rebounds per game last season. However, the Red Dust Heelers will miss the presence of Joshua Turek who averaged a league-leading 31.3 points per game in 2018. Janik Blair is another key player that the Heelers will miss in 2019, while the remainder of the Heeler’s core such as Robert Pike, Kathleen O’Kelly-Kennedy, Jake Kavanagh and Clare Nott will all return for another shot at it.

One to Watch: With seven rookies/juniors on the Heelers roster this season, Cooper Whitestyles will be one to keep an eye on as the youngster looks to make his way up the NWBL ranks. With tenacity and a high level of defensive nous, Whitestyles is coming off a successful Kevin Coombs Cup campaign with Queensland North.
